The BassLink Interconnector, suffered a fault on the 20th December 2015. The 290km Basslink Interconnector was installed in 2006 and connects the 500kV transmission system in Victoria to the 220kV transmission system in Tasmania as well as provide FO telecom/internet services.
The CS Ile De Re was mobilised as part of the SPMA (South Pacific Maintenance Agreement). Due to the nature of the fact, the repair process commenced with an extensive fault-location process, to localise the fault location, before the cable bundle was cut and the restoration and jointing phases could begin. This involved various testing methods from shore ends, as well as de-trenching activities offshore in an attempt to locate the fault visually.
The repair was extremely challenging and weather dependent, however it was completed in June 2016, when the BassLink Interconnect underwent re-commissioning tests and protection trenching of the final bight area was complete.
Bill was first onboard this vessel, and the sister ship CV Lodbrog, in 2001/2002 during its conversion from a Baltic Ferry to a new Alcatel owned Cableship. Further trips on both these vessels included work on the Apollo Cable, ACMA Maintenance, LFON, SEAMEWE 3 repair and maintenance standby in Bermuda.
